Maizie Hempsell

Paralegal

Department: Medical Negligence

Location: Plymouth

Maizie is a paralegal in the Medical Negligence Claims department at Wolferstans. In her role, she supports Partner Peter Tassart with the preparation and progression of medical negligence claims.

Maizie joined Wolferstans in June 2026. She graduated from the University of Exeter with an LLB (Hons) in Law, achieving a 2:1.

At university, Maizie took a particular interest in medical law and wrote her dissertation on under 16s’ consent to medical treatment. She has long been drawn to this area of law, shaped in part by her experience navigating the healthcare system, which strengthened her interest in patient care and decision-making in medical contexts.

Maizie was previously a member of a Health Research Authority Research Ethics Committee, where she reviewed health and social care research proposals, considering issues including consent, risk, and the protection of vulnerable participants.

Alongside this, she has developed a strong interest in client care and safeguarding, supported by experience providing long-term care for a family member with Alzheimer’s and an elderly individual, which has strengthened her empathy, patience, and understanding of supporting vulnerable people.

Outside of work, Maizie enjoys spending time with family and friends, walking her dogs, and painting.
