Going the Distance for Recovery: Supporting Headway Plymouth

As we mark Headway’s Action for Brain Injury Week, we’re proud to share this personal story highlighting the life-changing impact of brain injury support services in our communities.

As an Associate and Litigation Assistant within a Personal Injury Department, I regularly see the profound and lasting impact that serious injuries – particularly brain injuries can have on individuals and their families. While legal support is vital, recovery extends far beyond the courtroom, relying heavily on specialist charities that provide ongoing care and support.

This is why I chose to support Headway Plymouth, a local charity dedicated to helping those affected by acquired brain injuries, by taking on the challenge of running the London Marathon on 26 April 2026.

A Personal and Longstanding Commitment

Headway Plymouth is a cause very close to my heart. They have supported my cousin, Neil, who suffered a traumatic brain injury following an accident at work in 1990. Over the years, their support has extended not only to Neil but also to our wider family, helping us navigate the long-term challenges that come with brain injury.

In addition to this personal connection, I have been proud to serve as a Director of Headway Plymouth since 2015, giving me first-hand insight into the invaluable work the charity carries out within our community. Seeing the difference Headway makes every day has been a powerful motivation to give something back.

Overcoming My Own Challenge

Taking on the London Marathon was a significant personal challenge. I suffered a slipped disc in September last year, which meant I was unable to run for 16 weeks and missed a substantial portion of my training. Returning to running and rebuilding my fitness required determination, patience, and resilience – making the journey to the start line and ultimately across the finish line even more meaningful.

I am incredibly proud to have completed the marathon and to have raised £2,850 for Headway Plymouth, vital funds that will help them continue their essential work.

Supporting Life After Brain Injury

Headway Plymouth provides essential services including rehabilitation, social support, and practical guidance for individuals living with brain injuries. Their work helps people regain independence, rebuild confidence, and adjust to life after injury – something I understand both professionally and personally.

Through my role in personal injury, I see how important it is that individuals have access not only to legal support, but also to ongoing care and community resources such as those offered by Headway.

Fundraising Beyond the Marathon

My fundraising efforts extended beyond the marathon itself. To help raise additional funds and awareness, I organised a quiz night hosted by Craig Butler, CEO of Headway Plymouth, alongside a cake sale and a sponsored dog walk. These events brought together colleagues, friends, and members of the local community, highlighting the collective effort behind supporting such an important cause.

A raffle held at the quiz night, featuring some fantastic prizes, further contributed to the fundraising total and helped generate wider support.

Continuing the Support

Although the marathon has now been completed, the need for support continues. Charities like Headway Plymouth rely on fundraising and awareness to provide their essential services to those who need them most.

If you would like to learn more about Headway Plymouth or support their work, I would encourage you to get involved.

Together, we can make a real difference – helping individuals not only to recover, but to rebuild their lives.
