Chloe’s 5 Top Tips When Applying for Our Training Opportunities
Current Trainee Solicitor, Chloe Farmer, shares her 5 Top Tips when it comes to applying for our Training Opportunities.
Make sure to make a note of these whilst you fill out your application forms!
-
Research the Firm Thoroughly
This is my biggest tip for those applying to a law firm. Identify why you would like to train and work there by understanding the firms specialisations and what sets it apart from others. You could explore the firms website, read reviews, articles, and reach out to current employees for insights. Generic applications rarely stand out.
-
Be Concise and Impactful in your Writing
When drafting an application, it is important to consider the audience. The individual reviewing the application may be unfamiliar with your values or motivations. Therefore, the writing should clearly convey why you are a good fit for the firm, and how your beliefs align with the firms values.
-
Highlight Relevant Skills and Experience
Regardless of your background, you will always have relevant experience that can be highlighted. The legal profession, at its core, involves communication, research and helping others no matter the legal sector. Think about experiences that require negotiation, attention to detail, or problem-solving skills that can directly translate to the legal profession and the specific firm you are applying to.
-
Proofread Carefully
Attention to detail is critical when applying to a law firm. Simple grammatical or formatting errors can detract from an otherwise strong submission. Always ask a friend or family member to proofread your application. I personally have always found printing the document and reviewing it on paper can help spot mistakes or unnecessary jargon that I missed on the computer.

Prepare for the Assessment Day
It is crucial to understand the firms values and your motivations for wanting to train there before the assessment day. Prepare and practise common assessment day tasks and interview questions, the STAR method and linking the question back to the firm creates well-considered answers. Additionally, planning thoughtful questions for your interviewers can help ensure the firm aligns with your career goals.
