Delayed Diagnosis of Melanoma Leads to Devastating Health Battle

Medical negligence can drastically alter lives, as we have seen in our client Patrick's case. His experience highlights the critical importance of timely diagnosis and appropriate medical care. Despite the challenges, Patrick’s perseverance and our dedicated Medical Negligence team secured the justice he deserved.

The Initial Oversight

Patrick developed malignant melanoma under the nail of his big toe. Unfortunately, a biopsy was negligently overlooked at the hospital, delaying his diagnosis until over two years later. This delay led to severe physical and psychological injuries, a poor prognosis, and a limited life expectancy.

Subsequent Medical Challenges

Following the delayed diagnosis, Patrick underwent a right groin dissection, which resulted in lymphedema (swelling of body tissues) and required a course of radiotherapy. For a while, Patrick seemed to be doing well until he was diagnosed with a pancreatic metastatic tumour three years later.

Major Surgery and Its Impact

The following year Patrick underwent extensive surgery, including a total pancreatectomy, near total gastrectomy, splenectomy, lymphadenectomy, and portal vein reconstruction. This surgery significantly affected his ability to lead a normal life. Despite these challenges, Patrick continues to work full time on a hybrid basis.

Legal Battle and Resolution

Patrick sought help from Wolferstans Solicitors. The case was initially handled by Simon Parford (now retired) and later by Elizabeth Smith, Head of our Medical Negligence team, with assistance from Emily Self. Our team worked diligently to ensure Patrick received the justice he deserved.

Securing Financial Stability

A round table settlement meeting resulted in a significant settlement figure of over £1 million, with an additional £100,000 secured for interim challenges during the claim. This settlement provides Patrick and his family with financial security to help them navigate the challenges ahead.
