Divorce? – Don’t forget the children

Going through a divorce where children are involved can be stressful and harmful to the children as highlighted in this report ‘Don't Forget the Casualties of a Custody War’.  Where the arrangements for the children are in dispute it is usually better for the children if the parents can agree themselves rather than go to Court over the children. The Courts encourage separating parents to try mediation before making an application to the Court. The process can help separating couples to learn how to communicate with each other following the breakdown of their relationship. Children will be upset by the separation of their parents but their distress can be limited if they are able to see that their parents can be co-operative with each other and reach a settled position for the arrangements for the children.
