Free legal advice for jobseekers

City law firm Wolferstans is offering free legal advice for people involved in a continent-wide training scheme aimed at getting unemployed people into work.

The North Hill-based firm is supporting the Euro-funded Individualized Training in Acquiring New Skills and Raising Employment Competences Programme, known as INSIGHT training.

Run by Tamar Science Park-based EuroPartnership Agency Ltd, it's aimed at giving people skills to find work and settle into a job successfully.

And Wolferstans is providing free legal support, such as details of employment law, contracts, working hours, and advice for migrant workers and their families too.

James Twine, partner and head of the firm's employment team, said: "A lot of people are unaware of their basic employment rights, and especially foreign workers are more likely to be taken advantage of.

"It's important we share our knowledge and they are not treated unfairly."

He said the Wolferstans team have helped INSIGHT by drafting documents included in the training materials.

And he stressed the firm takes corporate social responsibility very seriously, having last year celebrated 200 years providing legal services for Plymouth people, businesses, public sector bodies and voluntary organisations by raising £2,012 every month for charity.

Six were chosen: Children's Happy Hospital Fund, Headway Plymouth, Jeremiah's Journey, St Luke's Hospice, Age UK Plymouth and Shekinah Mission.

The project helped Wolferstans win the corporate social responsibility honour at this year's Herald Business Awards.

Mr Twine said the firm's involvement with INSIGHT "reflects that quite nicely" and reaffirms "the values of the firm".

"It's not something we are charging for," he said. "But it's free of charge to support a project we believe in."
