Silicosis: An Incurable Lung disease linked to Quartz kitchen worktops
There were 8 reported cases of Silicosis in the UK last year. Although the disease has been around for many years, even dating back to the building of the pyramids in Ancient Egypt, this is the first time the disease has been recorded in the UK.
All UK cases were linked to workers cutting quartz being used for kitchen worktops and directly linked to their inhalation of dust. These worktops have a high silica content to make them more hard-wearing and durable.
What is silicosis?
Silicosis is a progressive and incurable lung disease caused by the exposure to silica dust. Prolonged exposure to silica dust can increase the risk of lung cancer and other respiratory issues. The consequences of silica dust exposure are not only debilitating but can also be fatal.
What is silica?
Silica, a naturally occurring mineral found in various construction materials such as sand, concrete, and stone, becomes hazardous when reduced to fine dust particles. When these particles become airborne, they can be easily inhaled by workers, leading to severe health consequences. Silica dust exposure occurs when engineered stone such as quartz is cut, engineered, or excavated from the ground and is also particularly prevalent in tasks like cutting, drilling, or grinding materials containing crystalline silica.
Who can be exposed to silica dust?
Stone Masons and kitchen fitters can be exposed to silica dust as well as workers in the sand blasting industry, glass makers, foundry workers and people that work with pottery. There have been no reported cases in the owners of the worktops.
