Life can change unexpectedly. Whether due to illness, injury or age related conditions such as dementia, there may come a time when you need someone you trust to help make decisions on your behalf.

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to plan ahead and choose who would act for you if you were unable to make certain decisions yourself.

In support of Dementia Awareness Month, Wolferstans is offering a £50 discount on Lasting Powers of Attorney for clients who attend an appointment before 31 October 2026 and quote DL26 when booking. T&C’s Apply.

Why Consider a Lasting Power of Attorney?

Many people assume that a spouse, partner or adult child can automatically make decisions for them if needed.

In reality, this is not always the case.

Without the appropriate arrangements in place, loved ones may face difficulties dealing with banks, utility providers, care providers and other organisations on your behalf.

By putting an LPA in place, you remain in control of who makes decisions for you, how those decisions are made and the support available to your family if circumstances change.

Understanding the Two Types of LPA

Property and Financial Affairs LPA

Allows your chosen attorneys to help with:

  • Managing bank and savings accounts
  • Paying bills and household expenses
  • Managing investments
  • Buying or selling property
  • Handling pensions and benefits

Health & Welfare LPA

Allows your chosen attorneys to make decisions about:

  • Care arrangements
  • Medical treatment
  • Day to day welfare
  • Life sustaining treatment (if you choose to include this authority)

Why Act Now?

A Lasting Power of Attorney can only be created while you have the mental capacity to understand and approve it.

Once capacity has been lost, it is often too late to put one in place.

Where no LPA exists, families may need to apply to the Court of Protection for authority to act. This can be a more complex, costly and time consuming process.

Is an LPA Right for Me?

Many people associate LPAs with later life planning, but they can be beneficial for adults of any age.

You may wish to consider an LPA if you:

  • Want to ensure your wishes are respected
  • Want to make things easier for your family
  • Own property or have savings and investments
  • Would like to choose who makes decisions on your behalf
  • Have older Powers of Attorney that may need reviewing
