Due to the increased use of wartime artefacts in schools teachers have been warned that helmets and gas masks are not safe unless it can be confirmed that they are asbestos free.
On analysing the gas masks and old war time helmets the Health and Safety Executive warned that the majority of masks tested did contain Asbestos with only a few being free from any of the dangerous dust particles. Schools have been advised to double bag and have them disposed of by licensed specialists due to the risk of contracting an asbestos related illness. As most of the gas masks in question are from World War One it is sad to see them disposed of due to their historical significance, however due to the real health and safety concerns it is clear that they can no longer be used due to the risk of inhaling asbestos.
