A Will Review Changed Everything: Our Client’s Story of Protecting Their Family’s Future

A Will Review Changed Everything: Our Client’s Story of Protecting Their Family’s Future

Updating your will is an important step in ensuring that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. For many of us, we assume that our assets will automatically go to our parents or children, but this may not always happen. This was the case for one of our clients, who found out that her estate would go to her child's biological father, even though he had never played a part in their life…

What happened?

Our client initially assumed that her estate would go to her son, and never gave it a thought about what would happen if he were to pass away before she did. However, during an event that Wolferstans’ Will & Probate team were attending, our client had a conversation with one of our team members, Emma Banner, who explained that once her estate had passed to their son, if he were to pass away as a child (therefore no will), the estate, worth almost one million pounds, would likely pass to his biological father, who did not want to be a part of the child’s life.

This realisation prompted our client to seek help from Emma, who was ‘brilliant in explaining all her options and listened to what she wanted to achieve’. Emma helped our client update her will and provide financial security to other members of the family.

Since then, our client has recommended that people make a note of what they are wanting to achieve with their will and ask for a review to check that this is what their will reflects. She also advises that people review their will when there are any changes in family circumstances.
