BBC News Devon: Hatherleigh cattle market fire prompts asbestos fears

James Walsh, Partner and Solicitor at Woflerstans comments on the BBC News Devon story:

“If we thought asbestos was no longer being used in these modern times we have to think again.  This latest episode of potential asbestos exposure shows we unfortunately have many years to go where we have to be vigilant as to the presence of asbestos materials particularly in older buildings.  Exposure to asbestos is one of societies biggest killers with over 2000 people dying each year from mesothelioma contracted from historic exposure to asbestos.  Due to the latency period though those potentially exposed this week will not develop any symptoms for a minimum of 10 years of which may be extended by up to a further 40 years after the exposure.”
