Supporting our Armed Forces Community

Supporting our Armed Forces Community

We have been helping members of the Armed Forces, their families and the people of Plymouth solve their legal problems for over 200 years. Several of the Wolferstans team are veterans or come from a service family.

The Armed Forces Act 2011 enshrines the principles of the Armed Forces covenant into law ensuring that the Armed Forces community does not face disadvantage due to their links to the Armed Forces.

Close to 4000 Armed Forces Covenants have been signed by all sizes and shapes of business/charity/partnerships up and down the UK; nearly 450 in the South West. The Covenant is about a promise to Service Personnel and their families that they should not face disadvantage, and yet for Businesses it is also about mutual benefit from the support provided plus access to talent pools that most welcome in these days of low unemployment.

The AFC is also backed up by a three-tiered Awards Scheme which recognises the level of support delivered (and benefit gained) by the signatory organisation.

Wolferstans signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2015 and pledged to support the employment of veterans and service families, participate in Armed Forces Day and aim to become a forces friendly service provider.

Plymouth Armed Forces Covenant meet at regular intervals throughout the year to share best practice and bring together ideas that support the community. Wolferstans has been a firm fixture of Plymouths Corporate Covenant and has been one of the driving forces behind the Armed Forces Jobs Fair. Now, taking the lead for ‘Employment and Finance’ in the Plymouth Covenant, Wolferstans, alongside other members including Crowne Plaza, Keir, City Bus and BMT Group, are arranging CV and Interview technique workshops tailored to different industries and employer information days with the support guidance of Wessex RFCA to showcase the transferable skills of the service leaver to employers.

Since signing the Covenant in 2015, Wolferstans support for our armed forces community internally and in our wider community has grown year on year. In 2017, Wolferstans were awarded the Gold Award under the Defence Employers Recognition Scheme which recognises and awards employer organisations who have demonstrated or advocated support to defence and the armed forces community and aligned their values with the Covenant.

Phil Thorneycroft, Partner and Head of the Armed Forces Team at Wolferstans, says, “Working with our armed forces community is such an important issue for Wolferstans. We are collaborating withan increasing number of organisations and charities to ensure that we are helping as many people as possible and referring our clients to those charities and organisations who can provide the welfare support that we can’t. The number of veterans and service families working for Wolferstans has grown significantly so there is a real commitment within the firm. Being a signatory of the covenant has been a major driving force for us and we look forward to continuing our support”.

Will your organisation be the 4000th National signatory or the 450th in the South West?
