Getting Pretty Muddy for Cancer Research
21st July 2018 sees some members of the Clinical Negligence Department donning their workout wear in order to take part in Race for Life Pretty Muddy, a 5k muddy obstacle course in aid of Cancer Research UK.
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life is a series of women-only events raising money for research into all 200 types of cancer.
Unfortunately, cancer is a common condition. Around 300,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK. More than one in three people will develop some form of cancer during their lifetime. Treatment for cancer includes surgery, chemotherapy (drug treatment) and radiotherapy.
Treatment for cancer can be highly successful, but much depends on when the diagnosis is made, and how quickly the correct treatment is started and the follow-up and monitoring arrangements afterwards.
Over the last 40 years, cancer survival rates in the UK have doubled. In the 1970s just 1 in 4 people survived their disease for 10 years or more. Today 2 in 4 survive. Cancer Research UK’s ambition is to accelerate progress and see 3 in 4 patients surviving the disease by 2034.
Cancers can be missed and any delays or failures on the part of medical professionals to diagnose cancer can result in the progression of the disease to a more advanced stage. The consequences of this progression can be devastating.
