Little Things & Co

Baby Loss Awareness Week – Wolferstans and Little Things & Co

Baby Loss Awareness Week takes place from 9 to 15 October every year. It is an opportunity for parents, their families and friends, to acknowledge and remember their babies who have sadly died. This is led by Sands, the Stillbirth and neonatal death charity, who also work in collaboration with over 40 charities in the UK.

One of those charities is a local charity to Plymouth, and Little Things & Co is working in partnership with Wolferstans to help raise awareness of baby loss. Little Things & Co provide practical and emotional support to those who have suffered the loss of a baby.

This fantastic charity was initially created to provide bespoke clothing to tiny babies who had died, and the charity has since grown to include support group meetings, a dedicated memorial garden within Derriford Hospital, literature and any additional support to relieve the mental suffering of those suffering from bereavement or loss.

Little Things & Co help support families through “Gentle Touches” which is a service offered to families following the death of a child. They provide items to funeral directors, cemeteries, hospitals and any other professionals in need. This may include baby cribs and graveside dressings.

Little Things have a Little White Angels service, where they provide beautiful white peace birds, free of charge, to grieving families, to be released at a baby’s funeral to mark a symbolic goodbye. At Wolferstans, when we are instructed to investigate the loss of a baby, we see client’s struggling through the grieving process, and these small touches make every difference in helping parents who are going through unimaginable loss.

Finally, and true to their original roots, they provide bespoke clothing designed to dress babies born too small and too soon. Elizabeth Smith and Helena Campbell from our medical negligence department visited the bereavement suite at Derriford Hospital and have seen these beautiful garments first hand, and they are made with such care, helping families know they have the support they need. Little Things currently provides clothing to 31 hospitals throughout the UK, from the tiniest of cribs for miscarried babies, to bespoke outfits for early gestational babies where shop bought clothing is too big, providing tiny babies with dignity.

In support of Baby Loss Awareness week, Little Things will be lighting up buildings in pink and blue across the city, including Smeaton’s Tower and the Guildhall, to help Plymouth remember lost babies.

At Wolferstans we are proud to share the work of this wonderful charity, and their #angelarmy. When we are instructed to investigate treatment leading to the loss of a baby, parents are understandably grieving and emotional, and often struggle to relive the facts of their loss as part of the litigation. By having charities who provide such amazing support, we can confidentially work in partnership, knowing charities like Little Things and Co will offer all they can to help families through the hardest of times.
